TOUR ITINERARY
DAY 1: OUARZAZATE → TODRA GORGES → MERZOUGA DUNES
Your adventure begins with an early morning pick-up from your accommodation or the airport in Ouarzazate. From there, you will drive east toward the stunning Todra Valley, where the persistent flow of the river has sliced a dramatic, red-walled canyon directly through the mountains. You will have plenty of time to stroll along the canyon floor and admire the scale of the cliffs. Afterwards, the journey continues through the vast palm groves of Tinjdad and Touroug, with a break along the route for a flexible lunch.
In the afternoon, you will arrive at the edge of the Sahara in Merzouga. Here, you will mount your camels to journey deep into the rolling sand dunes, pausing on a high crest to watch a spectacular desert sunset. You will then continue to a luxury desert camp to enjoy a welcoming evening of traditional Berber music, campfire dancing, and unparalleled stargazing under an open desert sky. Dinner and overnight at the camp.
DAY 2: FULL DAY MERZOUGA DESERT EXPLORATION
Following breakfast at the camp, the entire day is dedicated to uncovering the diverse landscapes of the Erg Chebbi region, featuring towering dunes, seasonal wetlands, fossil horizons, historic mines, and lush oases.
The exploration kicks off with an off-road drive to a historic kohl (eyeliner) mine, followed by a visit to a local nomadic family. You will step inside their traditional woven tents to learn about their unique way of life while sharing a warm cup of traditional tea. Next, you will travel to the village of Khamlia to experience the vibrant music and dance of the Gnawa people, whose heritage connects back to ancestral roots in Mali, Sudan, and Niger. There will be free time to enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. In the afternoon, you will wander through a peaceful palm grove and take a short drive to the seasonal lake of Merzouga, a popular haven for wild flamingos when water levels rise.
Later, you will return to the dunes by camel, pausing once again on a high ridge for a dramatic sunset before arriving back at your luxury camp. The evening concludes with dinner and lively Berber drumming around the campfire under a star-filled sky.
DAY 3: MERZOUGA SAHARA → AIT BEN HADDOU KASBAH → MARRAKECH
Wake up early to witness a breathtaking sunrise illuminate the heart of the desert dunes. After breakfast, you will travel back to Merzouga to reconnect with your driver and begin the westbound journey. The route features scenic mountain viewpoints and casual café stops before reaching Ouarzazate, where you will have free time to enjoy lunch.
Afterwards, the drive carries you to the famous ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, a heavily fortified earthen village protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site. This striking location has famously served as a backdrop for legendary films and series like Gladiator, The Mummy, Alexander, and Game of Thrones. Finally, you will navigate the winding roads of the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka Pass, descending into Marrakech for a drop-off at your hotel, riad, or the airport. End of the tour.
A note on travel alternatives: If the 9-hour return drive to Marrakech feels too demanding, the tour can alternatively conclude at the Errachidia airport (ERH), located just 2 hours from Merzouga. From there, Ryanair operates a quick 1-hour domestic flight to Marrakech three times a week. Please note that flights are not included in the tour package.
