TOUR ITINERARY
DAY 1: ARRIVAL AT ERRACHIDIA → MERZOUGA
Your tour begins with a pick-up from the Errachidia (ERH) Airport or your local accommodation in town. From there, you will take a direct drive south to the Sahara dunes of Merzouga—roughly a straightforward two-hour road trip. You will check into your accommodation and spend your first night in Merzouga.
A note on flights: Domestic flights from Marrakech operated by Ryanair run three days a week (arriving early between 7:00 AM and 3:00 PM), while Royal Air Maroc operates daily domestic flights from Casablanca (arriving late at night around midnight). We can easily modify this first-day itinerary to match your exact arrival time.
DAY 2: FULL DAY TO EXPLORE THE MERZOUGA DESERT
Following breakfast, the entire day is dedicated to discovering the wonders of the Merzouga Desert (Erg Chebbi). The landscape features sweeping sand dunes, a seasonal wild lake, fossil fields, historic small mines, and lush oases—perfect for light outdoor activities.
You will start with an adventurous off-road drive to an old kohl (eyeliner) mine, followed by a visit to a nomadic family in their woven tents to learn about their daily lives over a warm cup of traditional Berber tea. Next, you will continue to the village of Khamlia to experience live Gnawa music and dance, a deep cultural tradition kept alive by residents with roots tracing back to Mali, Sudan, and Niger.
You will have free time to enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. In the afternoon, take a relaxing stroll through a peaceful palm grove and drive a few kilometres to the seasonal wild lake of Merzouga (frequently referred to as the flamingo lake when water levels attract them).
Later, you will switch to camels for a trek across the Erg Chebbi sand dunes, stopping on a high ridge to witness a spectacular desert sunset. The trek continues to your luxury camp, where you will enjoy a delicious dinner and traditional Berber drumming around a crackling campfire under a star-filled sky. Overnight at the desert camp.
DAY 3: MERZOUGA → RISSANI → ERFOUD → ERRACHIDIA
Waking up early to catch the quiet desert sunrise is highly recommended. After breakfast at the camp, you will return to meet your driver by either camel trek or a comfortable 4x4 vehicle.
Today's route takes you to Rissani—the historic capital of the Tafilalet region and a vibrant market hub, particularly on traditional market days (Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays). Next, you will continue to Erfoud to tour a local fossil workshop and see the region's unique geology.
The drive then heads back north toward Errachidia, featuring scenic rest stops along the way, including a magnificent panoramic viewpoint overlooking the vast Ziz Valley palm groves. The tour concludes with a drop-off at the Errachidia Airport in the early morning or at midday to match your scheduled departure. End of the desert tour.
