TOUR ITINERARY
DAY 1: ARRIVAL AT ERRACHIDIA → MERZOUGA
Your desert journey begins with a personalized pick-up directly from the Errachidia (ERH) Airport or your local city accommodation. From there, you will head south, driving through the beautiful landscape of the Ziz Valley towards the golden Sahara dunes of Merzouga. This straightforward and scenic drive takes roughly two hours. Enjoy dinner and your first overnight stay in Merzouga.
A note on flight schedules: Domestic flights from Marrakech operate three days a week via Ryanair (arriving between 7:00 AM and 3:00 PM), while Royal Air Maroc runs daily domestic flights from Casablanca (typically arriving around midnight). We will happily adapt the day’s timeline to correspond perfectly with your flight arrival.
DAY 2: FULL DAY IN THE MERZOUGA DESERT
Following breakfast, the entire day is dedicated to uncovering the wonders of the Merzouga Desert (Erg Chebbi). This spectacular environment features sweeping sand dunes, a seasonal wildlife lake, ancient fossil sites, historic mines, and pristine oases—making it ideal for relaxed outdoor discovery.
The day's adventure begins with an off-road drive to an old kohl (eyeliner) mine. Next, you will visit local nomads in their traditional woven tents to experience their unique way of life firsthand over a warm cup of traditional Berber tea. From there, you will continue to the village of Khamlia to witness the vibrant music and dance performances of the Gnaoua people, whose ancestral roots trace back to Sudan, Mali, and Niger.
After some free time for lunch at a local restaurant, you will take a stroll through a local palm grove and drive a few kilometers to the seasonal Merzouga Lake (frequently called the flamingo lake). In the late afternoon, you will mount your camel for an authentic trek across the Erg Chebbi dunes, pausing on a high crest to marvel at a dramatic Sahara sunset. You will then arrive at a premium luxury desert camp, where you can enjoy a delicious dinner and traditional Berber drumming around a campfire beneath a star-filled sky.
DAY 3: MERZOUGA → RISSANI → ERFOUD → TODRA GORGES → DADES VALLEY
After breakfast, you will leave the dunes behind to visit the town of Rissani, the historic capital of the Tafilalet region. Rissani remains a crucial trading hub in the area, boasting a massive and lively traditional market (souk) that comes alive every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday.
Following a stroll through the bustling market, the drive continues to Erfoud, where you will tour a specialized workshop showcasing beautiful regional fossilized marble. You will then travel through the sprawling palm oases of Touroug and Tinjdad to reach the magnificent Todra Gorges. Here, the flow of the Todra River has carved a dramatic canyon with sheer, towering red cliffs that serve as a paradise for rock climbers. You will have plenty of free time to wander along the riverbed, take in the scenery, and enjoy lunch at a local restaurant.
In the afternoon, the journey carries you into the Dades Valley via Boumalne Dades. You will make a couple of essential stops to photograph the fascinating "monkey fingers" rock formations and take in the view from a high mountain overlook. The day concludes with dinner and a comfortable overnight stay at a local hotel.
DAY 4: DADES VALLEY → ROSE VALLEY → SKOURA → OUARZAZATE → AIT BEN HADDOU → HIGH ATLAS MOUNTAINS → MARRAKECH
On the final day of your desert tour, the drive continues to Kalaa Magouna to visit the beautiful Rose Valley. An annual Rose Festival is celebrated here every May, where local cooperatives showcase an array of regional rose-infused products, ranging from waters and oils to fine cosmetics and perfumes.
Next, you will navigate through the peaceful palm groves of Skoura before reaching Ouarzazate, affectionately called the gate of the desert. Here, you will have the opportunity to tour the famous film studios where countless Hollywood blockbusters have been shot.
The route then leads to the iconic Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, an incredibly well-preserved fortified clay village recognized globally as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This striking location has provided the backdrop for legendary films like Gladiator, The Mummy, and Alexander, as well as hit TV shows like Game of Thrones.
After stopping for lunch and exploring the kasbah, the journey moves toward Marrakech. You will cross the spectacular High Atlas Mountains via the winding roads of the Tizi-N-Tichka pass, stopping at scenic overlooks for photos. The tour concludes in the late afternoon or evening upon arrival in Marrakech, where your driver will drop you off safely at the airport or your accommodation.
