TOUR ITINERARY
DAY 1: FES → IFRANE → MIDDLE ATLAS MOUNTAINS → ZIZ VALLEY → MERZOUGA
Your adventure begins with an 8:00 AM departure from Fes, heading south towards the Sahara. The first stop on your journey is Ifrane, an alpine town famous for its European-style architecture, earning it the nickname "the little Switzerland of Morocco." After a quick coffee break, the drive continues to the cedar forests of Azrou, where you can watch wild Barbary apes playing in their natural habitat.
The route then climbs over the Middle Atlas Mountains to Midelt—known as the apple capital of Morocco—where you will stop for a satisfying lunch. In the afternoon, you will cross the Tizi-n-Talghemt pass (traditionally called the "she-camel pass") and descend into the spectacular Ziz Valley. This massive oasis is packed with lush palm trees and traditional mud-brick villages, offering plenty of incredible photo opportunities.
You will arrive in Merzouga by the late afternoon. Here, your camels and guide will be waiting to lead you deep into the Erg Chebbi dunes. You will pause on the crest of a high dune to watch a brilliant orange sunset before arriving at your luxury desert camp. After a delicious dinner, the camp staff will light a roaring campfire, allowing you to relax to the rhythms of traditional Berber music beneath a spectacular, starlit sky.
DAY 2: MERZOUGA → RISSANI → FES
We highly recommend waking up early to witness a glorious Sahara sunrise painting the sand dunes. Following a tasty breakfast at the camp, the return journey to Fes begins.
The first stop of the day is the historic town of Rissani, recognized as the foundational site of Morocco's current ruling dynasty. If you happen to visit on a market day (Tuesday, Thursday, or Sunday), you will have the chance to explore its vibrant and traditional open-air souk.
From Rissani, the drive continues north through Erfoud, retracing the scenic route along the Ziz Valley and back up through the Middle Atlas Mountains. Your 2-day desert getaway officially concludes with a safe drop-off at your chosen accommodation in Fes by the late afternoon.
