TOUR ITINERARY
DAY 1: FES → IFRANE → MIDDLE ATLAS MOUNTAINS → ZIZ VALLEY → MERZOUGA
Your 4-day desert journey begins with a morning pick-up from your riad or hotel in Fes. Leaving the city behind, you will head south towards Ifrane, where you can take a short 15-minute break for a coffee in this picturesque, European-style alpine town. The drive continues into the Middle Atlas Mountains, stopping in the cedar forests of Azrou for a chance to observe the native Barbary monkeys in their natural habitat.
The route then carries you through Midelt and into the sweeping Ziz Valley, a vast gorge brimming with thousands of date palms. By the afternoon, you will arrive in Merzouga, checking into a beautiful local riad that offers stunning views of the golden sand dunes surrounding the town.
DAY 2: FULL DAY TO EXPLORE THE MERZOUGA DESERT
Following a delicious breakfast at your riad, your full day of Sahara exploration begins. The first stop is the village of Khamlia, where you will enjoy the unique, rhythmic sounds of Gnawa music, performed by locals whose heritage traces back to southern Africa. You will then take a 4x4 off-road to M'Fis, an abandoned mining village known for its historic galena (traditional mascara) mines.
Next, you will venture behind the Erg Chebbi dunes to visit a nomadic family living in traditional Berber tents. Sharing a cup of tea with them offers a fascinating glimpse into a lifestyle far removed from modern civilization.
In the late afternoon, prepare for an epic camel trek across the towering dunes to reach your luxury desert camp. You will pause on a high sand ridge to try sandboarding and watch a spectacular desert sunset. After enjoying dinner at the camp, relax around a roaring campfire under a brilliantly starry sky while the staff play traditional drums—and even teach you how to join in.
DAY 3: MERZOUGA → TODRA GORGE → DADES GORGE
We highly recommend waking up early to witness a glorious desert sunrise over the dunes. After a hearty breakfast at the camp, the westward journey begins.
The scenic road trip takes you through the towns of Rissani, Erfoud, and Tinghir. If you pass through Rissani on a market day (Sunday, Tuesday, or Thursday), you will have the option to explore its bustling, traditional souk—a fantastic place to see local handicrafts, spices, and authentic street food you won't easily find elsewhere. Along the route, there will be plenty of opportunities to stop for photos and learn about regional traditions.
You will then explore the towering, sheer rock walls of the Todra Gorge before continuing to the Dades Gorge in the afternoon. Here, you will check into your hotel for dinner and a relaxing overnight stay.
DAY 4: DADES GORGE → OUARZAZATE → AIT BEN HADDOU → HIGH ATLAS MOUNTAINS → MARRAKECH
After a tasty hotel breakfast, you will have some time to explore the Dades area before driving along the famous "Road of a Thousand Kasbahs" toward Ouarzazate. Here, you can opt to visit the renowned Atlas Film Studios or simply photograph them from the outside.
The journey continues to the magnificent Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is an architectural masterpiece that has served as the backdrop for legendary films and series like Gladiator, Prince of Persia, and Game of Thrones.
Following a relaxing lunch break, you will begin the spectacular crossing of the High Atlas Mountains, passing through charming Berber mountain villages. Your 4-day expedition concludes in the late afternoon with a safe drop-off at your accommodation in Marrakech, leaving you deeply enriched by the experience.
